Exhibition: Germany From The Eyes of Ibrahim Demirel
Germany is a country which has different meanings for the Turks. While some of us are there to work, some of us have been using the experiences of those that work there in our works for generations. As a scientist, we have made a lot of research, written thesis on that issue; as an artist, we have performed plays; we composed about those; we have written stories, novels and poems on the issue… Sometimes we even made movies… all to tell others about the people we have sent there and those that we left behind.
We have sent trains and planes full of hope to Germany… We have split our lives in half, sent parts of Anatolia there, piece by piece. Those that left longed for that which was left behind while those that are left behind longed for that which has left. The whole Germany experience left the Turkish people with a bitter taste. The self of the Turk has sustained irreparable wounds for the sake of increased living standards. The young generation of our people was lost, they ended up alienating from themselves.
İbrahim Demirel cannot remain insensitive to the whole Germany experience as an artist, and will fulfill his duty as a photography artist. The work of Germany is a testimony of his sensitive lens to the loneliness and desperation surrounding our laborers abroad.
